Don't Underestimate Your Importance

"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8

Some days are rough, but we are not in this alone. We are not told to buck it up and act like there is no problem. There is a devourer. He wants to take us out. What does that actually look like? He wants to obliterate our marriages, estrange us from our children, separate us from real relationships. He wants us to give up on love, lose hold of our joy and see our faith washed up, dashed on the rocks of disappointment.

If you are a mother, serving at home, you may not be recognized regularly for your service. In fact, our president recently said something to the effect that he wouldn't want any woman to have to choose to stay at home with her children. If the president doesn't even seem to see the value of moms sacrificing their personal ambition to raise up the next generation, I think it is safe to say we live in a culture that does not value the calling of motherhood.

The thing is, the culture we live in does not define us as Christians. We are in the world but not of it. The important thing as a woman of God is to be obedient to our heavenly father and what he has called us to do. I am reminded of the rebuilding of the wall in the time of Nehemiah. Each person was called to rebuild the section in front of their home. They were not responsible for the entire nation, just for what God had put before them.

I think it is easy to feel that our efforts are unimportant, when so few people even notice them. For heavens sake, the people we serve don't even appreciate it most of the time. (I have never had a toddler thank me for changing their poopy diaper or an elementary school student praise me for my commitment to doing math.)

The truth is tending the home is a noble calling. Don't grow weary in doing good. Don't listen to the lie that says what you are doing isn't enough. Trust God's leading that He has you right where he wants you. What we are doing in this moment may not look impressive from here, but when we step back to look from a higher perspective, we realize that small acts of faithfulness, coupled with the infinite grace of God, can create something more beautiful than we could ever dream.
